Venla llona Blom is a multi-award-winning vocalist, composer and beatboxer from Finland. She has toured around the world with her internationally acclaimed band Tuuletar and her vocals have been featured in the Game of Thrones trailer, among the others. She has an M.Mus degree in vocal performance and composition studies.

Ms. Blom has worked as a soloist in various projects with big bands, symphony orchestras and choirs. She has done an extensive amount of studio work and her vocals have been used in movie soundtracks, TV-shows and games. Her solo debut album NEVRAK will be released in September 2024.

Ms. Blom is based in Helsinki and currently works as a composer, vocalist and performing artist in the field of theatre and film music. She is specialised in extended vocal techniques, vocal percussions and traditional singing styles deriving from Scandinavian and Slavic folk music. She is also trained as a classical singer.

She has done several interdisciplinary projects as a sound artist and produced sonic art pieces for contemporary art exhibitions and events.

International Acclaim

Venla Ilona Blom has received outstanding critical acclaim for her portrayal of Markéta in Kaija Saariaho’s Innocence. Following her appearance at Semperoper Dresden in 2025, where Concerti singled her out for “the most impressive performance” of the production, Blom returned to the role at Theater Bremen in 2026.

German critics have repeatedly highlighted the extraordinary vocal character and emotional impact she brings to Markéta. Der Opernfreund described her casting in Dresden as “a stroke of luck”, praising her distinctive folk-rooted vocal expression and deeply moving performance, while Die Deutsche Bühne called her portrayal “captivating”.

In Bremen, Blom has again emerged as a defining presence in the production. Neue Musikzeitung described her Markéta as part of “the thread running through it all”, while Online Musik Magazin called Markéta “the musically central role” and praised Blom’s virtuosity across leaps and register changes.

Blom’s distinctive vocal language – rooted in Finnish and Finno-Ugric folk traditions and extended vocal techniques – brings a sound rarely encountered on the opera stage, making her interpretation of Markéta one of the remarkable elements of Innocence.
